I tried to explain the B2B "life is like a pipe".
Life is like a pipe: it goes round and round, you can't get out of it
penny rolling up the walls: she goes up and down up and down up and down up and down.

I just was skimming this...and I realized the "this me...yeah baby and the rest." debate---I always thought it meant that he was going over her symptomalogy of depression and she was reading it over with the therapist and she said this me? yeah...and everyone else who suffers in the world; if you ever been to rehab a lot of the time it feels that everyone feels the same as you, but unfortunatley you went ahead and took it a step further. thats what I think she meant --- that no matter what she will have moments of depression (like the "the rest" in the world). I think she was showing the gaps in therapy...that they point you to a disorder and thats supposed to help you, but she finds everyone has the same symptoms at times, especially during break ups and that while the therapist thinks he is being enlightening she already knew it and thus she says "no no no" to rehab.

I don't follow you 100%. "If you ever been to rehab a lot of the time it feels that everyone feels the same as you, but unfortunatley you went ahead and took it a step further. " She hadn't been to rehab yet when she wrote the song, so what do you mean by that? Or is it just an example of how everyone has symptoms of depression sometimes?

I always interpreted as her saying, yep, I'm depressed, and got a whole shyteload of other issues as well.
What is your greatest fear?
Amy: "Dying old or never meeting Tony Bennett; if I never get to meet him, I might as well be dead."

yeah kinda like rehab/clinic/therapy session...what name you...either way they give you a laundry list of what you already felt and somehow its supposed to help you. I can't wait to be a therapist cause I'm not going just jam pamphlets into patients hands....like everyone has to have moments of depression in life...but some use drugs, have eating disorders...and therapy can make you feel like you took depression a step further

Exactly.
I do get what you mean though, it was what I was trying to say as well.

I have always loved that line btw. Might even want it as a tattoo.

always thought it was like this

Life is like a pipe: it goes round and round, you can't get out of it

penny rolling up the walls: she goes up and down up and down up and down up and down.

Basically I thought she was saying she lives on an emotional roller coaster.

for me, it's an obvious reference to her drug of choice. A pipe, a penny of pot smoke making it's way..

don't think you can isolate the lyric with out that which preceded it;
"You love blow
And I love puff"

she digs this dude who is into a narcotic which freezes the mind, while she is into pot which opens up the mind. The "I love you much...it's not enough" meaning, the realtionship is further complicated and challenged by the fact they both get high with substances that keep them apart while they're high and therefor probably when they're not.

"I had some dreams they were clouds in my coffee"--Carly Simon

similar analogy. " I love you much"...dreams, just smoke traveling up her pipe.

What a hell of a lyricist, eh?

I'm amazed that people have been discussing the "life is like a pipe" lyric for years now, it's interesting to read other people's opinions because I'd never really thought about it in more than one way. I always interpreted it as a pipe that's being smoked, and the penny rolling up the walls could mean it's being sucked in and blown out without being in control. It being tiny could refer to feelings of insignificance or powerlessness. All of which is what life can feel like.
