These are great stories. I always love the ones where people are like, "THAT voice is coming out of THAT!?"

That was basically me when I heard the song "Back to Black" for the first time. I didn't realize it was Amy. At first I thought it was a new Lauryn Hill track! Then I was very surprised to learn that it was a tiny, white, Jewish woman from England!

"RE: What's your favourite Amy video?

You Know I'm No Good

Because of the video, and maybe also because this was my first introduction to Amy; I remember so clearly my jaw dropping when I casually turned on the TV and heard that voice in mid-video and did a quick about turn to see who the heck was singing!"

I've been hooked ever since.

i remember seeing rehab on tv in dec 06 and loving the song, but thinking she was fucking cool as well coz here was this amazing song but she was singing it (or miming it) like she couldnt care less. was pestering all my local record stores for a copy of the cd but they were getting in like 3 a week and theyd sell out on the 1st day. eventually gave up on the cd and started an account on itunes specially and downloaded it there. thought it was amazing, listened to it over and over in the 1st week. she wasnt my favourite artist of all time until i discovered videos on youtube - 1st the live ones (i remember the 1st live video i watched was me & mr jones at bbc sessions), then the buzzcocks thing, then interviews. she made me wanna go out, get drunk, have a good time, then come home and put her record on. then i got frank, and the rest is history

since i bought both b2b & frank on itunes, i then bought a physical copy of b2b (signed!), then the vinyl of b2b, then the deluxe edition. then i bought a physical copy of frank cd (over internet, they sent me 2 copies!), then frank on vinyl, then deluxe frank. people think im so strange for paying for the same thing over and over....

Don't remember the date, early 2007. I saw her live performance of rehab at the Brits on tv, with the black and red dress and setting. I said to myself: Who is this girl? She had that deep and rich voice, very 60's but I saw her tattoos and said to myself: she looks complex; I like her...;-)

I heard Mark Ronson was working with Christina Aguilera on her album Back To Basics back in 2006. He had been answering a few question about her album through MySpace. So, I decided to check out his EVR radio show and was like "Damn, dude is really diverse when it comes to music..." He played "In My Bed"... I had absolutely NO CLUE who Amy Winehouse was but Im a big Nas fan so when I heard the sample, I was like "Oh shit, that was HOT!!!!"....

After "In My Bed" went off, he played the demo to "Wake Up Alone" and I damn near cried towards the end. It was so raw and honest and just everything I needed at the time, especially musically. It was just something fresh and new. This was around May 2006, right before my birthday. I got HOOKED!!!! I started youtubing her videos and live performances and went around praising this woman. She WAS very unknown in the US at that time. I had the album around... October 2006 when it came out in the UK and not many people had it around that time where im from. I played it for everybody.

Its funny because around that time, I had met this guy and he was like "what are you listening too?" and I was like "Amy Winehouse..." and I let him listen to Wake Up Alone or You Know Im No Good. Knowing who she was felt so exclusive here in the States. I played her music for art class. They didnt know who the fuck she was. My instructor was like "You have a lot of old school music on there." It was just Amy lol

Then, she blow up and became popular as hell and everybody would sing Rehab and annoy the shit out of me.

mtv awards 07
i guess i must have heard rehab before i saw her for the first time but i had no idea who the hell she was and that seemed like the first time i was listening to the song. now that i think about it.. i was stuck on led zeppelin and jazz before amy and didnt really listened to anything..'modern' so i couldnt care less about some english girl who sang no, no, no. 'good music' and 'modern music' didnt go together for me back then.
and to be honest i thought amy (i hadnt seen her yet of course) was another Pink, trying to look all so badass and trashing hollywood's drugies it girls, because i just knew the song was called 'rehab', and i hated that. Pretty stupid, i know.
so i'm watching the vma's because lindsay lohan was supposed to present this girl, Amy Winehouse, but she had some.. ''inconvinients'' haha and bruce willis went instead. So Amy comes out looking all gorgeous and i was like.. what the fuck is that? but not in a good way... i was instantly atracted like..the HUGE hair, the make up, the tattoos, really really skinny.. what the fuck was that?? i didnt instantly liked her but i just couldnt stop watching. And the way she performed.. like she didnt gave a fuck about the performance, the song, mtv and all the mega super important shit.. it was just her with her little dress and the band and had this face of.. i dont give a shit about this.. i actually dont want to be here.. dunno SOMETHING attracted me.
next day youtube made it worse, i rememeber the first thing i saw was Coachella, thats when i realised she was fucking gorgeous and THE voice...omg. and i saw this interview at coachella, that was never ever able to see again, thats when i first knew she was english. Then when i saw Valerie at the dl i felt haaaard. Bought btb the next week when no one knew about her around here.. thank god the fella at the record store knew about her and told me swhere to find the record. Frank has never been released here so i downloaded it and then there was no turning back. Then btb deluxe, then frank deluxe, then frank (got it from spain) then the dvd, then the poster and now i'm this weird little sick fuck, winehouse obsessed. the story of my life is quite sad..
but thank you, whoever it is, for putting the little girl with the big hair and even bigger voice in my way. changed my life, musically and personally.

Ugh. It was terrible! And the whole "they tried to make me go to rehab and I said YES YES YES..." UGH... I had to school a few people on her because they thought she was nothing more than just some catchy tone writing human cartoon. I started to resent Rehab so much. I can only listen to the demo, now.

^^ You know what is one of my biggest peeves recently? EVERY magazine/paps/tabloid article just has to refer to Amy as the "troubled star."

Why? It's everywhere! Why not the "incredibly gifted musician?" ---- Oh yeah, that's right - that would be a compliment! Those paps probably have never heard of that word!!
