And then there was Amy Winehouse, whom I saw just as she was on the cusp of becoming the unfortunate subject of wild, overblown and often damaging newspaper speculation. From what I saw of her, she's a frail and vulnerable figure who can out-sing almost anyone alive today; she may not have the turbo-charged tonsils of the big American R&B stars, but she has a real talent for making a song sound as though it's just popped out of her head. When she sings, she makes it sound natural, spontaneous - and real.
