Rock Photographer Piper Ferguson shares behind-the-scenes stories of some of her most iconic photos — including Winehouse, The Strokes and The Killers — in her new book 'Indie, Seen' ...

Piper-Ferguson-photo-book-110223-10-b62f

“Everybody wanted a piece of Amy that day because she was probably the most sought after performer at that Coachella in 2007 that everybody wanted to see,” Ferguson says of this photo of Winehouse from the festival.

“I'm glad that I got her putting on her shoe because it was just this insecure moment of indecisiveness, of shoes on, shoes off. She seemed so vulnerable at that moment and just unsure of how to really take it all in. And I think so many artists experience that, but maybe don't talk about it as much.”

In March 2004, visiting Amsterdam, Amy went to the Bar Américain, where she was photographed by the bartender Cor Jufermans. Next door to the bar was a hotel where record labels used to house their artists when they had to come to the Netherlands to perform or promote. Cor recounts:
'I'm not a photographer at all, I just shot famous guests for the bar project.' Now the walls of the bar are decorated with more than 450 portraits of famous people, including Amy.

The artists would often stay at the hotel for days at a time to be interviewed by journalists from across Europe. "And then they would sit in the bar in the evening in their free time. Some of them also came back regularly over the years, so there was a chance to get to know them better. I became friends with Paul Weller. He still comes to Amsterdam almost every year. I once asked him: which is the best female voice today? The one you don't know, he replied: Amy Winehouse. Then I said: Paul, look who's hanging there. I've photographed her once before when she was here, back before she was a big success."

It's so cute of Paul speaking like that about Amy. But why on earth he thinks nobody remembers Amy? She is definitely one of the best singers of our generation and she is not forgotten at all.

I guess this dialogue took place even before Back To Black was released or around that time

Issue no. 561 of City Life, 11-17 November 2004, featuring a colour photograph of Amy Winehouse on the front wrapper, boldly signed in black marker "Ta Blackwell, Love Amy"

PROVENANCE: the signature was personally obtained by the vendor's husband in Manchester in November 2004. He used to work in a bookshop called Blackwells and Amy went in looking for graphic novels whilst on her 2004 UK tour when she played the University of Manchester Academy.
