Kev, I am so with you on that one. People seem to forget that George W. Bush was NOT elected by the people of the United States, yet we are consistently held responsible for the policies of his administration. I am so fucking tired of that. Many of us are just as outraged, if not more, for what has happened to this country in the last eight years. Why the hell do you think an overwhelming majority voted for Barack Obama? Because they like his smile? Do you think people in this country are happy about the entire world economy being in the toilet because the greediest of greedy people were allowed by their buddies in the federal government to do whatever the hell they wanted with other people's hard earned money? Americans are probably pissed off more than anyone.
Great post, Tiki - thank you. I'm with you, as are millions of my fellow Progressives and my like-minded friends here. I'm disgusted by the damage Bush, and lets not forget Reagan, have done. The war in Iraq was a travesty. I'm ashamed that our standing in the world is damaged. I hope Barack can reverse some of the damage, but I don't know if he'll have the time, due to the economic mess we're in right now.
I think it was antceleb who mentioned that a third of Americans didn't know who their vice president was. If we're talking about Cheney - I think most people were in denial about that rather than being ignorant!
Also, I'm just not crazy about America being summed up in such stark and general terms. It's a much more complex and complicated country than is interpreted, and I've learned that since I moved here. Yes, there are ignorant people in this country, but there are plenty of ignorant people in my home country, too. I think they can be found in every country in the world.
There are many, many intelligent and well-read citizens who are yes, outraged by some American foreign policy. But who, at the same time are heartened by the type of foreign policy that gives aid to developing countries, and has poured millions into fighting the spread of HIV in Africa, for example.
I think the reason Obama's win was not quite the landslide it should have been after eight years of hell, is racism, unfortunately. There's still a long, long way to go. but things are moving in the right direction, albeit painfully slowly.
Ummmm - what the heck was the topic of this thread?
