I never said that Zalon wasn't talented. What I said was that his talent is mediocre at best-- he's got a great voice, but as a soloist, there's something lacking. For lack of a better expression, he doesn't have the "x factor", if you will, to be his own pop star. And no, it's not "ridiculous" to feel that way. I've worked for years at a major record label and consider myself well-versed in the ins and outs of the business. And even if I wasn't well-versed, no one's opinion is ridiculous, that's just rude.

And yeah, I think it's fine that once you're successful you want to bring your crew along for the ride. That means Amy's an awesome person who hasn't forgotten about her roots and the people who've stood by her, and it shows how supportive she is to those she loves. However, it doesn't make it a smart business move. I'm actually quite surprised Island is letting her get away with this-- I'm sorry, but with the current roster, I don't think they'll be making much money off of this imprint, but I hope they prove me wrong!

Yeah.

Island seems to let her do whatever for the sake of not losing their precious cash cow.OR... theytrulylove the girl.

When I quote "no one's opinion is ridiculous", then I'm quoting an opinion, and I beg to differ, as I've certainly heard some ridiculous opinions in my time, and still do, and I've also heard some perfectly reasonable opinions being ridiculed, and still do. However, this is just an observation, not an opinion about what was or wasn't supposed to be ridiculous.

Anyhow, there is little to no reason to assume that Lioness is a vanity venture of Amy, as she's clearly committed to ensure that Dionne gets what she needs to pursue a successful career in music, and I have a strong feeling that she'll do alright.

Edit: "Winehouse is a loyal person and a caring person, too. Can we agree on that?" Yes, I can agree on that.

Amy Winehouse died, and she's taken a part of my soul with her. May that part be the love that I felt for her, and may the love that I still feel for her be the undying part of us both.

OK soon as I heard bout Lioness I thought Juliette would be signing up.
I've heard some of her stuff, lol why don't they just call it "The Winettes" lol borrowing the idea from the Ronson vid for Valerie - both she and Dionne have an echo of Amy in their voice... but tbh that's neither here nor there.

I wouldn't have said Dionne, Juliette and to an extent Zalon joining the label makes it a novelty/joke... but Heshima? Hm didn't watch X-Factor but he hasn't got through... if he was good then it's a good business idea, especially since he's one of Amy's backing singers.

But she can't be Mother Theresa of the singing world and give every artist a break... doesn't work like that

I suspect that Amy's main consideration isn't vanity or making big profits, but insuring that her artists get a fair share of whatever revenue they generate. I'm sure Dionne & Zalon will receive a higher percentage from their sales than Amy ever has.

It's a bit of both. It's similar to Arista Records relationship to Whitney Houston. These companies believe in their artists and even support them for years.

If you were the head of Island Records, would you really want to tell Amy that she can't have her own record label? I wouldn't. It's clear that Dionne is very talented. As for the others, I agree there's probably less of a business case for signing them. But if Amy produces another blockbuster album, that will make up for any Lioness loses many times over. Now if I were convinced that Amy was never going to be making hit records again, I'd maybe make a different decision, even if I loved her, which I think they actually do. There's definitely a risk/reward calculation involved, but that's business.
