Your first break came when you started singing with the guys who would become the Dap-Kings in the '90s. They formed their own label for that vintage sound. They must have felt like lost soul mates to you.
From the first time I worked with them, it felt so comfortable. I could see their label as another Motown or Stax. We were doing our own thing.
But the greatest success they've had so far wasn't with you. It came from backing Amy Winehouse on her hit CD.
To me, they just played on the record. I told them, "Y'all ain't making millions." They just followed her. But it did cause more people to come back to check us out.
Do you know how Amy is doing now?
I haven't seen her in a while. I'm hoping she's better than when I saw her. I just cried. We're just praying she can get herself together because she's got a gift too. She needs to get back out there.
