What's the consensus here on the line "Five-story fire as you came", from Love Is a Losing Game...is it "came" as in "orgasm-ed", or "arrived"?  I can see it working both ways and I usually interpret as the latter meaning lately, but it's obviously totally Amy to intend the former meaning.

This was on my mind 'cuz I just watched 45th at Night, and I noticed the word "came" was dropped along with all of the more obvious swear words in her performance...just got me wondering what you all thought?

I always thought arrived, but yeah, it could work with either meaning actually.

Somehow I never noticed that word was dropped on 45th at Night until I just went back and watched it again.

Amy was never shy in her lyrics, like in I Heard Love Is Blind she sings "I was thinking of you when i came".

In the song she comes to the realisation that despite being head over heels for Blake, she was only a flame for him (ie. a fling). She has to however inject some humour into the song, by saying that when he climaxed she was no longer just a flame, but a five-story fire.

I always felt uncomfortable when Dionne covered this song...

This is why I love this forum!  This seems so obvious once you spell it out, but I never connected the 'fire' reference back to 'flame'.  That is embarrassing, but I have to say 'thank you', crol.  And how effing brilliant...that settles it for me.

I always thought that line was genius. Like she's being funny and saying: Well, actually Blakey... You came hard and I know deep down I'm not a fling!!! And the image is of one lone fireman trying to put out a burning building. Wake up alone has amazing imagery too.

OR maybe I'm just being dirty minded. hahah .*runs off quickly*

Funny you mention Wake Up Alone, because I remember when it occurred to me how many water/wetness metaphors there are in that song.  There are nine, but I thought, well...if you count "he comes to me" you could make it an even ten!  Great that I thought that (even though it doesn't really work), yet the meaning of 'came' in LIALG went right over my head...

That line is genius.  I've been thinking about it ever since crol pointed it out so eloquently.
