With the DVD release of the heartbreaking documentary Amy and its soundtrack album out now, unseen snaps from 2003 sessions for the artwork of Amy Winehouse’s debut album ‘Frank’ have emerged. “They’re from two sessions, the first was in London and the second was in New York,” says photographer Charles Moriarty. “It was about four months before ‘Frank’ came out. She was great, we had a lot of fun. She was a really kind personality and really gave to you. We had a lot of laughs.”

Amy is available on Blu-ray & DVD from Monday, the soundtrack is released today.

The Ritz Tower, New York

Charles Moriarty: “That’s New York. We got really lucky and stayed in The Ritz Tower. This was just a snapshot in the bathroom while we were getting ready to go out. We had a hectic journey, we only had 24 hours, and it rained most of the time, so all our locations had been taken off the table and we ended up shooting in The Ritz. It was a lot of fun.”

The Ritz, London

Charles Moriarty: “That’s in the laundry room of The Ritz. We were just trying to find a location to have a bit of fun with, and I think Amy had a lot of American kitsch attached to her. She was interested in old Americana, so it sort of fit.”

New York

Charles Moriarty: “This was late in the night in New York. We were making our way through SoHo, and the colours in the phone box just leapt out at me. While we were trying at the time to keep the location neutral, this little moment was fun, and was one of the first images we shot there.”

AMY is available on Blu-ray, DVD & Digital from Monday, the soundtrack is released today. For more info on Charles’ images visit www.beforefrank.com

Amy Winehouse unseen pics illuminate Camden

On Saturday 31st October, some of the best known buildings in London's Camden Town were illuminated by never-before-seen images of former resident Amy Winehouse.

Taken in 2003 when Winehouse was just 19 years of age, the pictures, by friend and London-based photographer Charles Moriarty, capture the young Londoner as a happy and carefree artist just before the release of her debut album, Frank.

Moriarty's photographs were projected on buildings and locations important to Winehouse and her story, including The Hawley Arms, Jamestown Road, Camden Town Tube Station, Chalk Farm Road, Camden Lock and Inverness Street.

The projections mark the release of Asif Kapadia's acclaimed documentary AMY on DVD, Blu-ray and digital download, available to own from Monday 2nd November.

Makes me sad she can only be in Camden in this form now, but its a nice idea

"The singer’s London home paid tribute to its most famous daughter on the weekend."

The Hawley Arms, the boozy epicentre of noughties Camden, was just one of the local buildings to be splashed with unseen images of singer Amy Winehouse on Saturday. The photos, which were taken by Amy's friend Charles Moriarty in 2003 when Amy was 19, were also projected onto buildings on Jamestown Road, Camden Town Tube Station, Chalk Farm Road, Camden Lock and Inverness Street. It was all part of a promotional push for today's release of the Asif Kapadia's Amy documentary, which just picked up Best Documentary at the Hollywood Film Awards, but whilst there was commercial impetus behind the project, the sight of a fresh-faced Amy hovering over her favourite borough was nonetheless a mixture of stirring, saddening and haunting.
