Swell of support for permanent Amy Winehouse memorial in Camden

Camden residents are being encouraged to suggest tributes in memory of Amy Winehouse that can be erected in the borough.

The internationally-famous singer’s death in July prompted music lovers from around the world to descend on Camden Town to pay their respects outside her Camden Square house.
Flowers, cards, candles and paintings were left on the pavement by fans showing their support for the 27-year-old.
But three months after her death, plans are gathering pace for a more permanent memorial to be located near her home.
A Camden Council spokeswoman said: “We are aware that there have been suggestions made as to what might be appropriate as fitting tributes to Amy Winehouse within the borough.
“Conversations are still taking place and we welcome ongoing discussion about this sensitive issue. No suggestions or plans have been agreed.”

After her death, fans were encouraged to write messages on 10 local road signs as a tribute to the star, which were then given to her family. However, thieves escaped with four of the signs.
Another memorial displayed locally was a portrait of the singer by artist Johan Andersson, which went on display at the Lock Tavern pub in Camden Town.

A poster of the artwork also went on show at Camden Town Tube station.
“Shortly after her death I felt like I needed to paint it,” said Mr Andersson. “I would definitely be interested in painting something else if someone commissioned it.
“A painting would be an interesting idea as a tribute, depending on where it is for.”

Since her death, Ms Winehouse’s family have launched the Amy Winehouse Foundation, which has been set up to help children and young adults facing difficulties with illness and substance addiction.

I think we should keep pushing for this, it's easier to achieve than a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and maybe even more significant. Vote for the poll ! (for the moment it's 49% vs 50%) Don't think that it will make a big difference but you never know. This article is now one of the top search results when you type "Amy Winehouse,memorial,Camden" in Google. If a member of the Camden council would try to gauge the popular support for this online, it's better that they discover a poll with an overwhelming majority for the memorial.;-) They are also asking for ideas,that painting by Andersson is a nice gesture but it's not good enough.Forumers from London or Camden should send better suggestions.B-)

Anyway, thanks for posting. It would be great if there was a memorial in Camden, personally i'd love a statue of her, my concern is it could get vandalised. though. She loved the place and the place loved her too. There is a good community feel about Camden so i have faith the majority of residents will approve, just up to the council.
