As far as I understand, she should have passed out before she was able to drink that much (0.4 BAC) so she must have sculled it, probably hoping to sleep. Sipping alcohol takes effort, so sculling is probably what she did, a fatal mistake. I think in Howard Sounes' book Amy 27 he points out that maybe she didn't care if she woke up or not, and I think she was headed for disaster for so long, that eventually she probably thought she was invincible. I am not saying she killed herself (I don't know if she did, I think it was accidental, but she was obviously destructive with self-harm,) although it is interesting that everyone said she appeared happier in the last weeks (which is normally a sign of suicide, the relief) and that she donated expensive clothes to charity before she died (although we all know she was a bleeding heart) obviously giving things away is a red flag though for most people. I like to think she didn't join the 27 club voluntarily, but we will never know. I guess you could call it suicide in a way, but a slow one. Perhaps if she had never gotten onto crack and heroin she would still be here, but many reformed junk addicts end up drinking themselves to death. I feel this is what happened.

As well as this, the point about Librium is very significant. I believe this is what made her act completely blotto in Serbia, too many sedatives and alcohol. I recently had an operation on my foot and had oxycodone plus nerve pain drugs. I drank only a little bit and felt like I was going to pass out. Celebrities die like this all the time, it doesn't take that much to push the body over the edge. Peace.

I always said she appeared medicated at Belgrade. I have seen so much footage of Amy when she was 'out of it' but Belgrade was something different. And if Amy refused to take medication for her Bi-Polar for so long the fact that she started to would signal that she was trying to get better. She just had one more battle to conquer, which was alcohol, but unfortunately it was one battle too many.

There is something wrong with your calculations because I am not a drinker let alone an alcoholic and I can perfectly drink let's say 5 shots of tequila and not die. I may not even throw up.

Are you talking about those little thin glasses were they serve tequila or pure liquor?? 5 shots of those may put someone 5 times over the drinking limit I'm assuming but no way is anybody going to die from such a small amount, not even a recovering alcoholic.

Recovering alcoholics usually die from heartattacks or brain seizures and this may happen while they are sober like it happened to my aunt, or possibly during drinking. If Amy had a heartattack or a brain seizure surely her body would have lesions on her heart or her brain, as far as I recall, the autopsy found neither. Her body shut down and went to sleep so to speak without any trauma like a heart attack or worse, and this happens with alcohol poisoning and it takes A HUGE AMOUNT for alcohol poisoning to happen so something is seriously wrong with your math. I'm not even going to attempt at doing the math because I am terrible at it, I simply made the thread because I wanted to have an idea of what exactly it is that happened.

Skimming through the Amy book thread, it says in the book that she would drink TWO BOTTLES of wine a day, basically drink one, go to sleep, get up and drink another and so on, that's a HUGE amount of alcohol, just huge, and way more than 5 times the drinking limit, if she drank three bottles of vodka that night in one go she very well could've want to kill herself, in fact I would say that she was in a slow suicide ever since she came back from St. Lucia the last time, no way this girl was trying, I'm sorry but Amy had a deathwish

I was referring to pure liquor, yes. The DUI guidelines website referred to 100 proof liquors particularly, and the serving doesn't go by glass size, but by 1oz servings (regarding liquor).

I was not saying that that is how much AMY drank, or that is how much you would drink, or I would drink (although I don't drink...so I imagine 5 1oz shots of liquor would put me out quite quickly!), I was only referencing how easy it is for a person of such a petite stature to reach such limits, thus sort of showing how easy it would be for Amy, considering her size, to ingest such an amount that could prove fatal. Alcoholics, or routine drinkers, who have developed some semblance of a tolerance to alcohol to some level, will often require more as their body has learned to consume greater amounts, but after a prolonged period of abstinence, Amy's physical tolerance levels will have gone down to an extent. While I'm sure she still consumed a large amount, due to her physical size, it would really not take an exorbitant amount of alcohol to put her at such a level. Also, it's not rare for an addict to relapse into using the same amount he/she was used to using before, no matter the vice, and this will often prove fatal to them because their tolerance levels have gone down.

These guidelines are not a be all and end all either, as they are specifically outlined for a person of around 100lbs; a person who weighs more will handle more before getting to that level, and a person who weighs less will handle less.

Also, 5x the legal limit is not exclusively fatal; people's bodies will process that amount of alcohol differently. It most certainly has the propensity to be fatal, that is indisputable, but it won't kill everyone who reaches that level. I'm sure her health status at the time of her passing did not help in this regard.

Let me put it this way, I don't think she killed herself but I don't think she cared much about living anymore either and not really buying the whole Reg fairytale etc. PS nice username!

Well, she must've drunk several times that amount because there is no way 5x the legal limit is fatal. A huge drunkenness sure, but fatal? I doubt it, even for Amy. And they weren't prolonged periods of abstinence with Amy, don't believe Mitch's lies.

I don't think she wanted to conquer it. Do we know if she was medicated on Belgrade? It's a possible explanation but it also could be that she was just beyond drunk because in other performances she would drink but you could tell she wasn't beyond tipsy.

I agree, people may not realize it but addicts don't want to die, they are just addicts. Amy's behavior is clearly the behavior of someone committing slow suicide and who wants to die. I mean if she didn't hit rock bottom in her life then I don't know what rock bottom is. She hit that low several times and it didn't force her to change, I don't think she wanted to live at all.

I'd pretty much agree with this. I don't think that Amy decided then and there on that night that she wanted to die and made up her mind about how she was going to do it in the way that, say, someone who hangs themselves does. However, I think the last couple of years of her life were like watching someone commit suicide slowly. The excessive drinking and drug taking and general disregard for her own health struck me as the behaviour of someone who didn't really care if she lived or died or what happened in between. This is a hallmark of depression - you don't necessarily want to die, but you stop caring about life and what you do to yourself. That can manifest itself in self-destructive behaviour.

but I wonder why, she had so much to live for. Did she hate being herself?

It's easy to say as an outsider that she had so much to live for, but that doesn't mean that she felt that in herself. People with depression often tend to have difficulty imagining the future, as well as chemically being unable to feel feelings of happiness (this can be helped with medication). Maybe she was having issues with her self-confidence, maybe she felt like she would never be able to write another album as good as Back To Black, maybe she was depressed about the Belgrade fiasco, maybe she was still caught up in Blake, maybe it was simply a chemical imbalance in her brain, maybe it was a combination of everything. I often think a lot very talented individuals have trouble reconciling themselves with the world around them too. Being a very sensitive person can take its toll. The fact is though, we just don't know how Amy felt inside, but she clearly was quite unhappy, particularly towards the end of her life.

I actually think a quote from Kurt Cobain's foster father applies here too, when he said after Cobain's suicide:

"He had the desperation, not the courage, to be himself. Once you do that, you can't go wrong, because you can't make any mistakes when people love you for being yourself. But for Kurt, it didn't matter that other people loved him; he simply didn't love himself enough."

A very poignant perspective on those who commit suicide, I think, and something that could be said of a lot of people.

I feel the need to comment on this. When I was checked into the hospital to detox I was really drunk and had the same blood alcohol content as Amy when she died.

Alcoholism and Eating disorders are the two most likely mental illnesses to kill somebody.

I think it's important to also point out that long term bulimia can cause seizures. Something to do with electrolytes or something. And just off tangent for a sec, there's a thread on the forum about the most shocking thing in Amy My Daughter, and for me it was that an addiction specialist recognised Amy was going into withdrawals, and told Mitch to get her a drink. (Amy suffered serious alcoholism, this shocked me.) As a drinker myself, depending on the alcohol you drink, most people should put on weight (unless they don't eat, which happens to many chronic alcoholics) due to the empty calories. The eating disorder Amy had is so often overlooked, I agree with BeehiveQueen, alcoholism and eating disorders are extremely dangerous, put them together, and bam. All over.

HELL NO.

the bulima had weakened her body - remember she was like a tiny bird.

too much alcohol for her tiny body to take.

Well then why are you all trying to silence me? Out of respect for Mitch Winehouse??? Please lol, he didn't even respect his own daughter.

i have to say something here.

Leave Mitch alone. I dont agree with everything he has done over the years, but he is doing a bloody of job of keeping his daughters memory alive and helping others.

At the end of the day he lost his daughter. So dont diss the man.

I think she was always alone though, even when she was with other people. Her husband Blake said she was the lonliest person he'd ever met. I believe that to be true. I guess sometimes people like Amy just travel thier own road to the beat of thier own drum. I think she knew where her road was taking her. I DON'T think she realized how short her journey would be.

nailed it.

I will say whatever the hell I want about Mitch and his phony foundation and sycophantic ways. Wake up people.
