The Covers Record

well i was thinking about amy’s music career and i thought to myself “she should do a covers record like in the style of Cat Power, making those covers her own” and i thought it might be a good idea so for fun list about an albums worth of covers that you think amy should cover and in what general style that the album should be…

  1. Down on Me (Big Brother and the Holding Company)
  2. Crying in the Night (Buckingham Nicks) * really applies to amy’s love life with blake now…
  3. Nomad/ Candlebright (Buckingham Nicks) kind of reminds me of amy
  4. Gold Dust Woman (Fleetwood Mac- Stevie Nicks) is amy’s theme song right now
  5. Sisters of the Moon (Fleetwood Mac - Stevie Nicks) about loneliness in the rock industry
  6. Two Heads (Jefferson Airplane) just a cool song…
  7. Greasy Heart (Jefferson Airplane)
  8. Red House (Jimi Hendrix Experience) great blues song
  9. All I Want (Joni Mitchell)
  10. Lithium (Nirvana) a little fun for amy to take the piss out of the press
  11. Storms (Stevie Nicks -Fleetwood Mac)
  12. the Wild Heart (Stevie Nicks) amy does have a wild heart…

if it wasn’t noticeable before, im a huge Stevie Nicks fan too, and i do think both have some things in common so thats why a lot of her songs were put on there

oh and id do the covers in an acoustic soulful way…

nice choices JJ. cant say ive really got into fleetwood mack, but i think thats mainly coz my parents are massive fans and ive seemed to generally go against their taste! one day though… i like that you mentioned the cat power album, she showed that cover albums arent just a cop out… i love all of johnny cash’s 5 american albums (Solitary Man is one of my favourite albums of all time)

i thought a while ago that if she was struggling to write an album, it might do her good to just do a covers album - get her working again, something to focus on, and to generally boost her confidence.
heres the album i think she should make:

  1. Don’t Think Twice It’s Alright (Bob of course)
  2. I Get Along Without You Very Well (my favourite jazz standard)
  3. Remember (Walking In The Sand) (Shangri-Las - essential)
  4. Back In My Arms Again (Supremes, would be great for when Blake gets out)
  5. You Don’t Know What Love Is (my second favourite jazz standard)
  6. Somewhere There’s A Someone (Dean Martin)
  7. You Don’t Own Me (Dusty Springfield - cant see her ever singing this tho…)
  8. I Love You More Than You’ll Ever Know (sigh… the albums centrepiece)
  9. If You Could Read My Mind (the old song, sung by many people)
  10. You’ve Got A Friend (in tribute to her mum [James Taylor], +donny sang it!)
  11. How Can You Mend A Broken Heart? (Al Green)
  12. River Deep, Mountain High (Ike & Tina Turner, end on a celebratory note!)

i think it would be cool to be in the style of the al green and donny songs, that kind of early 70s meandering soul, nothing too programmed or fancy like the late 70s.

I love Amy and she would do a great job but I think Janis already owns that one.

true, true…i was envisioning amy doing a very slow version of it but i think her voice is so strong that it might not sound right…
