Itâs a criticism of marriage/people getting married for superficial reasons when theyâre both a mess (ie. in the song âsheâ is chasing material shit and the status, âheâ is stringing her along and messing around with other women behind her back and is probably only in it for sex. Sheâs basically criticising the vapidity/shallowness of it all and that she can see through it on both sides, and that the whole pursuit is âfoolâs goldâ.
Well said, TBR. In case it helps understand the choice of metaphor, I would add that Foolâs Gold is an actual mineral that has a similar appearance to gold, causing many âfoolsâ to think theyâve struck it rich, when theyâve actually just found an attractive (yet worthless) lump of rock.
