Why do lesbians love her?

What an odd question this thread poses… LOL.

Yeah she does.
I didn’t think Amy would be like a gay icon though. But I never really thought about how many of her fans are gay I guess.

Makes sense.

because she does what she wants, she does what she pleases in every situation , yes, because her balls definitely

Barbra Steisand addressed the whole gay icon question in an interview, and I quote “Because I was different and I made it. So there is a chance to feel different and slightly out of the mold…” I think before gay lib Judy Garland was THE icon, because gays could relate to her tragic life since it was a “tragic and in the closet” existence back then. Since then, I think the criteria has changed. Bette Midler, Madonna, Cher et al embraced gay culture, cultivated that fan base and never forgot us. Madonna has described herself as a “gay man in a woman’s body”. Cyndi Lauper is another. So many… Don’t know about Amy, though she does have a huge gay following. maybe it’s something to do with what Streisand says, for me, and she does come from an honest place with her feelings…most of us gay dudes relate to that big time!!! As far as the lesbian attraction goes, I have no idea. The tough persona coupled with the whole lipstick thing, i dunno. Most of the lesbians i know are into James Dean!!!

Well, i think she’s hot…but I’m not a lesbian. lol. Whatever, I can understand why anyone would like her, really. Who wouldn’t?

I’m a lesbian and I think that gay people loves her for the same reason straight people do ;- ). Damn, is it really matter?

Nah, I think it was just curiousity really!

^ Agree.

To look at it from the other side, so to speak, I can see how Amy’s raw emotional delivery, rebellious nature, explicit lyrics and appearance would repel many mainstream conventional people ie. heterosexual couples with social airs and graces. So compared to the population at large there will be more gays and lesbians among her followers. There was also a thread about whether or not she’s good looking. I really cannot say that she is; she’s given her body too much abuse for one thing. But if you put up a photo of a female beauty say Marilyn Munro and said can you take your eyes off her I’d say yes very easily but as I scan these messages I often end up just staring at people’s avatars, likewise the cover of Spin or Rolling Stone! It’s weird there’s this allure and maybe it’s this that goes beyond gender and orientation. I think this is also what the editor of Vogue picked up on.

Amy has a mixture of courage and vulnerability which I think appeals to all of us, gay or straight, who share those qualities. Perhaps we’ve been through experiences like she’s had, or just relate emotionally. Listening to her music reminds me of the Roberta Flack song ‘Killing Me Softly’. I’d love to hear Amy sing that song.

Amy could sing the phonebook as far as I’m concerned, and I’d be as happy as a clam!!! Interesting comments, Black. My sister and mom, conventional folks will listen to Frank but not B2B because of the explicit lyrics so I think what you say is dead on! I grew up believing Barbra Streisand was gorgeous, and still love how she looks. Her appearance on the scene came at a time when Sandra Dee and the likes were there, but Barbra broke through with looks that were refreshingly different, “out of the mold”, like Amy I think. She paved the way for others to “make it” in an industry that valued looks over all else. Do you think Janis Joplin would get a recording contract these days when music exec’s want Fergie or Brit looks? I doubt it. Barbra redefined beauty standards, what is considered beautiful, and i think her unique and immense talent helped to do that. That’s the way i feel about Amy. In my mind’s eye she’s beautiful, and even more beautiful beacause she is so uniquely gifted in a way these other pop babe’s aren’t. I can’t take my eyes of your avatar!!!

yes, you are so right. We are tired of barbie dolls. Amy is out of the mold but sexier than all those barbies. She has a style of her own. She is unique and talented.

i agree we love her!

Well to address the Judy Garland question… So many things gay about Judy Garland’s life. Allow me to briefly list just some. Her father, who she loved dearly (as opposed to her ‘evil’ stage mother who she loathed), was a gay man. She grew up mysteriously attracted to gay people (2 of her husbands were in fact gay, including Vincent Minelli, Liza Minelli’s father). BTW, Liza also went on to marry a gay man, with the encouragement of her mother (neither of whom knew he was gay). When Judy’s personal problems starting becoming more apparent, and her career suffered, her gay fans stuck by her and they embraced one another. Gay men, before they could be openly gay in society, used to identify one another as “friends of Dorothy” as a sort of gay code. In fact the whole idea of going “over the rainbow” (gays adopted the rainbow as their flag, not solely due to this however) was a very appealing sort of idealistic escape for homosexuals at the time who longed for a more accepting place. Then there was the whole beautiful, passionate, tragic element which has been mentioned by others. And finally when she died a tragic death, it was on the very day of her funeral that when the gay bars were routinely raided, and the homosexuals harrassed, they decided they weren’t going to take it any more and rioted. Many, many gay people cite Garland’s death as an inspiration for this result, the final straw if you will. The riots of course became known as the Stonewall riots (the Stonewall Inn was a gay bar) and was the definitive moment that jumpstarted the gay rights movement. The rest is history. There are many gay icons, but that is why Judy Garland is, and probably will always be, the biggest. On an Amy note let me say that I think it is VERY likely to see drag queens dressing in Amy’s distinctive style if they haven’t already.

thanks for that info bustin! i always thought judy garland was a lesbian…because i figured that was why she was such an icon in the gay community. i didn’t know all of that info about her life!! i understand her being attracted to gay men…when i was in high school, i had the biggest crush on a boy that was obviously gay, but i was too blindsided to tell. and then two boys that asked me out in high school later came out of the closet. well, i suppose i can relate to judy garland in that way. i think amy is a wonderful icon for all communities! =)

I can’t remember where I saw her say these things but in one interview she says “I’m more of a boy than a girl but that doesn’t mean I’m a lesbian, at least not until I’ve had a sambouka.” On another post she’s asked who’s your favorite female artist? and she says Alice Cooper, I love her. Then she’s asked are you a sex symbol? and she says only to gays. I don’t know how to interpret these in depth except to say that she can be pretty hilarious. Sorry just noticed the second part was on the Kelly osborne interview thread
