Krissi Murison, editor of the NME:

Which pop star have you been most excited to meet?
My favourite ever was Amy Winehouse. I interviewed her the week before Rehab came out. People knew who she was but it hadn’t gone crazy. We did a pub crawl through Camden with her ordering loads of cocktails that didn’t have any mixers in them. She sang that cover of Valerie and brought the bar to a standstill.

“The wonderful thing about the Amy Winehouse record —and don’t take this as a derogatory remark— is that it has the sound of the amateur in it… I’d say punk was the glorification of the amateur.” - Malcolm McLaren

Maria Bethania:

Forty years ago, an American singer turned up on her doorstep, a bottle of liquor in her hand, her mind reeling. It was none other than Janis Joplin, one of Bethania’s idols, enjoying a chaotic sojourn in Rio in the months before her death. Bethania cannot remember why Joplin was brought to her house; nor does she recall much of their brief conversation. What sticks in her memory is the impression of her frailty, as if she had already passed into another world.
“For me, she’s up there with Billie Holiday, Callas, Piaf or Amalia [Rodrigues],” Bethania says, her eyes shining. I haven’t seen any women who are the same since then. And now there is this girl that I’m totally in love with. How do I say the name of my favourite singer?I am trying to guess who she is talking about, Bethania utters the name of Amy Winehouse (which she pronounces “Winey-house”). “She has an amazing voice. I pray every day for her not to die like the other did, because she has a lot to live for and to teach us how to sing. She’s real, she’s not a liar — everything that comes out of her is true.”

I confess: I got caught up in the media hype of her addiction. I didn't buy the CD. Poor, silly me. I love her voice, her lyrics, her vocal style, her swagger and soul. She has to go through what she has to go through, but she has a gift that is just amazing. When she has the breakthrough . . . DAMN!. The world is in store for something really special. I'll wait. In the meantime, I will pray and listen to anything Amy.

I think of myself as a mans man. But when I see this the goosebumbps go up my neck and I'm almost moved to tears with the magnificance and tragedy that is Amy. As a musician and singer I'm in awe

Maria Bethania was just SO spot on. I guess what attracted everyone about Amy, even those who didn't speak english and understand her lyrics is that she is not a liar. Everything she's sung sounds like a deathbed confession to me.

^ Not that she sang in the streets for money literally, though she is as streetwise as anybody, or grew up in a brothel, but in her wild untamedness and in the urgency and passion of her lyrics/performance is where I see much similarity with Edith Piaf.
Amy Winehouse died, and she's taken a part of my soul with her. May that part be the love that I felt for her, and may the love that I still feel for her be the undying part of us both.
