Name registration delays Amy Winehouse foundation

Amy Winehouse's father Mitch has said his plans to launch a foundation in his daughter's name have been delayed.

He said it's because the name 'The Amy Winehouse Foundation' has been registered by someone else.

"Somebody else pinched it off of us before we could get it registered," Mr Winehouse said.

"All these donations which are coming in - we don't know what to do with them at the moment."

Foundation plan

Mitch Winehouse explained that he has having to "hold off" on his plans "for the time being".

But he insisted it would still happen: "The plan is to help all children - not just rehabilitation, not just substance abuse. It's to help all children in need."

Continue reading the main story All these donations which are coming in - we don't know what to do with them at the moment

Amy's father had announced his plans to set up a foundation in his daughter's name at the singer's funeral in London on 27 July.

"If you cannot afford a private rehabilitation clinic, there is a two-year waiting list for help," he said at the time.

He added that the 27-year-old had "conquered" her drug addiction before her death but had been "trying hard to deal with her drinking".

Mr Winehouse was speaking outside the Home Office in central London (18 August) where he was meeting government officials where he was urging them to "reallocate" funding for young people dealing with addiction.

An inquest into Winehouse's death was opened and adjourned until 26 October.

The toxicology tests to determine the cause of the London singer's death were expected to be published within four weeks of her death.

She was found dead at her home in north London on 24 July.

I smell lawsuit for the cynical fucker that's done this...

Aren't there ways for organizations and corporations to legally take back domain names that others have registered without resorting to million-dollar payoffs?

This has got to be a really common occurrence, I would imagine. It only costs $10 for any chancer to register a domain name - hoping for a big pay day. You never hear about that pay day actually happening, do you? I really have no idea about the legalities, though....

For domain names, you have to start a dispute with WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organiziation). If this could apply to foundation names, I am not sure.

Although it would take some money to fight this in whatever avenue... it would be hard for this leech to prove that the registration was not done in bad faith, especially if it came after Amy's passing.

Not sure what the laws are like in the UK, but in the US usually there is some kind of protection in using someone's name, likeness and what not without family permission. One couldn't just create the "Michael Jackson Foundation" if it wasn't registered and expect go get away with it.

Interestingly enough a check of http://www.charity-commission.gov.uk doesn't show anything yet.

EDIT: The amywinehousefoundation.co.uk name has been registered though. Registered address is here on Google Streetview...http://tinyurl.com/a...housefoundation

hopefully, because the other domain names are registred by "007 promotions" and apparently these are notorious cybersquatters who tried to extort money from the Academy Awards in 2009 :

It's one thing to try and get money out of a big corporation by registering a domain name they are likely to want to buy (not that I'm condoning this), but to try and extort money from what is to be a charity? That's just low.

I hope Mr. Stuart Gregson has the money to go before WIPO. Even if he does, he would stand little chance of winning the dispute.

Hope Mr. Winehouse is aware that he can challenge these "bad faith" registrations.

Any info we get on the registrants of domains that should belong to Mitch, please post them herein. Just left a message offering our help, although I think they have suspects lined up already.

Yeah... anything we find out, can we post it here please so I can direct Mitch to this thread?

Cheers all x
