For me, the likes of Lil Wayne have bastardised true Hip-Hop with their futile profantities and misogynistic lyrics. I like old school Hip-Hip before it was corrupted by Capitalism: Gil Scot Heron, Public Enemy, Run DMC, Salt n Pepa etc. As for Hip-Hop now, I'm into conscious Hip Hop such as Taleb Kweli, Mos Def. And then Kanye's early stuff (before he started proclaiming himself as a genius )

Eminem...he's definitely talented (though I don't agree with the media spin that he's the new massiar (sp?) of Hip-Hop but that's kind of a separate issue) but I feel like he's always attacking me when I listen to his music. I don't get much out of it

blu & exile's "below the heavens" album has been one of my favourites for the past few years, very close to being a modern day classic.

chances are if a song is played on the radio i won't have heard it because i tuned out of the radio years ago. hip-hop isn't dead you just have to do a little bit of work to find the good stuff.

I never understood it when people say they like kanye's "early stuff"............What kanye were people listening to?(no offense?

His rhymes have always similar and he has always called himself a genius producer and musician. Sometimes I think people use "Jesus Walks" and make it seem like there were 20 jesus walks on his debut album. I'm still trying to understand this whole "kanye changed" like he was a saint or something in 04/05. .I seriously think people(again no offense) don't know what their saying and just repeating it because of one song..."jesus walks"

I never understood the term "conscious rapper" either. Every musician good or bad is conscious of the music they make. Btw you do know Mos def has a song called "Ms Fat Booty" and also uses profanity right?

As for Eminem, people sometimes forget that for the most part its just acting. I think people sometimes forget that music is art and judge a person's personality wayyyyyy too much by their music/lyrics.

Btw London Sweet I'm not singling you out. I'm just talking generally. I just never understood why people can see a guy like Robert Dinero act like a maniac in taxi driver and know not to take it seriously, Joe Pesci can go around killing fat dudes with pens in Casino, etc.

But for some reason people use music TOO much to determine an artist real personality. I can understand a little but

Ps. Only RollingStone called him the king of hip hop.

Ok. By "early stuff" I literally mean his early songs and albums compared to his more recent ones which, in my opinion (because what's the point of music if you DON'T have a personal reaction - either good of bad - to it?) isn't as good.

Not really appreciatig your patronising tone. Yes I'm aware that Mos Def uses profanities. If you reread my post, I mentioned specifically pointless profanities as in those used with excessive coarseness just for the sake of projecting a certain image - again, I cite Lil Wayne among many others as an example.

And just to point out (I know you said you weren't singling me out) I merely mentioned how felt listening to Eminem's music. As in, the music that Eminem puts out. Ive no idea what kind of person Eminem is in his personal life, so all I can judge is my emotional response to his music....right?

I really do not understand why when having a discussion people always say things like how the other person has a "patronizing" tone. How exactly am I being patronizing? I just made an argument. I made it clear I wasn't singling you out.

I know you didn't mention how he is in his personal life...that's why I made it clear my post wasn't talking about you. Your post just "reminded" me about what other people say. I don't appreciate being labeled as a bully or something like that.

I swear man its like the minute you put something different as someone else in a "discussion" thread all of a sudden your being patronizing or picking on them.

I only brought up the fact if your aware if Mos def(who I also love btw) also uses profanity to make sure if you listen to him for sure. Its nothing personally against you. Its just that in the past on other websites I've heard people say they listen to him because he doesn't use "profanity" and is an "angel", and isn't "commercial" like kanye ...And then act surprised when I tell them that he is signed to Kanye West's music label and kanye is his boss

Just like when your having a discussion and one thing makes you think of something else. ...right?

the term conscious rapper surely isn't really that hard to understand, when people say it its clear to me at least that they're talking about artists who put out songs with positive or informative messages. songs that inspire or make you think outside of the box.

but overall its a just label attached to rappers by people who sell music... i watched a clip of mos def & talib kweli on the colbert report and mos said he never really got why people called him an underground rapper because that's not how he sees himself.

labelling musicians isn't a new thing though, even nina simone wasn't a fan of the term "jazz" preferring to call the music she made "black classical music."

I guess I see your point. Its just that sometimes when people use the word "conscious" for rap it makes it seem like most other rappers are dumb and don't know what they are saying.

I mean Nas is a 8th/9th grade dropout and is an extremely intelligent lyricist, Em failed the 9th grade three times and is also a great wordsmith(when being both jokey and serious).

Now wayne on the other hand is a graduate of the University of Houston.......lyrically........yeah enough said.

Lol but seriously though my point is that when they use the label "conscious" it just irks me a little. Can't they just call them emcees?

Ps. Do you guys think Dionne would respond to me on twitter if I ask her what were some of Amy's favorite hip hop albums?

LOL about Nas "gameface" I assume you mean his monotone voice. If so yeah I know exactly what you mean. Even though he is my 2nd favorite I just wish he would be more exciting sometimes with his voice. He does once in a while...but could do it a lot more.

I like that in his new single "nasty" he seems more exciting. Hope that continues some more.
Public Enemy is one of the hip hop group I haven't listened to. Not out of lack of interest....just never got around to them. Obviously I know about "fight the power" but nothing else.

Might try listening to more of their music when I have the time

DAMN I WISH I COULD SEE AMY's MUSIC PLAYLIST. I wish she posted some of it on twitter :(

Thanks a lot for 'Nasty', I didn't even know he had a new album out. I was referring to Amy, she said in an interview that when she listened to NaS it was like she had to get her gameface ready. NaS is very streetwise and talks about niggas and crime, I can't relate to him living in a deserted shithole in Belgium, y'know. Mos Def is less brutal and even romantic..I think?
P.S. Ask her! I'd love to know. Black on Both Sides was definitely one of Amy's faves

His album isn't out yet. That's just the first single. He said its planned to come out in December but might come out first quarter of 2012.

Lol...I know you don't mean to sound like that but it sounds like Nas is a nomad the way you described him. I don't think Nas is living in ghetto Queensbridge in 2011 anymore. No hard feelings though it just came out weird(no offense)

But I could understand why someone may like Mos Def more.

Well Hip-Hop aint my thing,
maybe its the bling or the jack the lad swing,
could be the timing of their rhyming isn't rhyme-in with my time in,
so i'll keep wining n dining my design in and hope Eminem makes me his next signing.

Now i'm resigning

In all seriousness, i've never really listened to a lot of Hip-Hop, i may give it a try in the future though.

Really about a thousand? Damn. I assume a lot are by the same artist(obviously) but you must have a really diverse hip hop taste.

I want to get into more and more hip hop artists because I always feel that I am missing someone that is talented.

I started listenig to hip hop in the early 90s and in the beginning I listened to artists like Ice-T, 2 Pac, N.W.A. and others but then as I got older I started listening to a lot of other stuff. Like you said my taste is pretty diverse also when it comes to music in general.
I know it's crazy from me that I bought so many records but believe me compared to some other people that I learned to know, my record collection really isn't that big. And to be honest during the last years I stopped buying that many rap albums or cds from other music genres. There was a time during my schooldays when I bought about 100 or 150 albums per year just to keep up with most of the new stuff that was out there. Maybe one reason that I stopped collecting music so excessively might be that as I turned older and had less time to listen to all of the music that I got. Right now I'm only buying the records mainly from a selected and very small group of artists. I also learned that this way you have more money in your pocket. One more thing LegendJJ I always wondered where are you from ? I know it's strange that I ask and you probably don't want to write it but I was just curious.
