Hi! Just a random question that came to my mind when I heard Madonna's song today.

This is an extract of Madonna's song (2005):

"The lights are on but there's no one home"

And Amy's tune, as you may already know, goes as follows (2006):

"The lights are on, but no one's home"

Quite similar, as you may notice. Is this just a coincidence? Or was this line inspired by Madonna's song? I know that Madonna's style was nothing compared to Amy's... but we all know how eclectic and music lover Amy was.

I honestly don't remember reading about this posibility. Amy has stated something like this in the 'Other Voices' interview back in 2006: "I graduated from the church of Madonna" but that's all I know!

I don't believe Amy took inspiration from Madonna's song. "The lights are on but no ones home" was (and still is) a common saying which means "a person who seems normal on the outside, but they aren't really normal on the inside."

Thanks for you quick answer. I was expecting a comment like this one. I am not a native speaker and now I realise this is a common phrase and hence the use of it in both songs (as well as in several others).
